Open air taxis ply the roads of St. Thomas. The taxis look like a truck with bench seating where the bed of the truck should be. There are private taxis in this form as well as public transportation. Technically, tourists should be able to stand by the side of the road and hail the "public buses", but its very difficult to tell which is public and which is a taxi. A private ride will cost approximately $10 per person to go across the island where a public ride is just $1!
