St. Thomas Transportation

With more than 10 cruise ships in and out of the harbor and jumbo jets on and off the tarmac in the high season, St. Thomas is the busiest of the Virgin Islands. While there are some negative impacts of the large quantities of tourists, there are also some positives: Cheaper transportation costs and more flexible schedules.

Getting to St. Thomas:
There are two ways on and off the island: by boat or by plane...oh yeah, or by seaplane . The modern airport, Cyril E. King Airport, is situated just a couple miles west of Charlotte Amalie. This airport handles traffic from major US gateways as well locations throughout the Caribbean. Many flights are routed through San Juan airport on Puerto Rico. American Airlines is the major airline flying in and out of St. Thomas. Ferries ply the waters between most of the US and British Virgin Islands. Ferries from St. Thomas to St. John and the British Virgin Islands of Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda run several times a day. Expect to pay a few dollars to St. John and about $40 to any of the British Virgin Islands. Seaborne Airlines runs frequent flights between St. Thomas and St. Croix and St. Thomas and Puerto Rico. These seaplanes provide an easy form of transportation combined with fabulous vistas of the Caribbean Sea.

Getting Around St. Thomas:
Open air taxis ply the roads of St. Thomas. The taxis look like a truck with bench seating where the bed of the truck should be. There are private taxis in this form as well as public transportation. Technically, tourists should be able to stand by the side of the road and hail the "public buses", but its very difficult to tell which is public and which is a taxi. A private ride will cost approximately $10 per person to go across the island where a public ride is just $1!
