St. Thomas Activities

If you're the type that likes to peruse stores and craft markets for hours on end, St. Thomas is the island for you. St. Thomas has taken its duty-free shopping status seriously and is renown for its wide array of high-quality merchandise for sale at low, tax free prices. What's on sale? Everything from Caribbean rums and liquors of all sorts to fine jewelry to electronics. There is also a craft market next to the Fort Christian selling silver jewelry with local stones, steel drums, sarongs, Caribbean paintings and other indigenous items. The two main shopping areas are on Main Street just off the waterfront in town and Havensight next to the cruise docks. Keep in mind that many stores only open when the cruise ships are docked, which in high season is quite often, but in low season can be sporadic depending on weather. At Havensight Shopping Center, tourists can board a tram to the top of Paradise Point for outstanding vistas of the island and the Caribbean Sea beyond. Or, for a more extensive tour of the area, hop a ferry to St. John for a day tour.

Beyond shopping, most of St. Thomas' activities lie in the ocean surrounds. Snorkeling is a popular sport around the island and is especially good off Coki Beach . Scuba diving is also a very popular past time in St. Thomas which has more than a dozen first rate dive sites nearby. If you are not certified for scuba, you could try Sea Trekking at Coral World Marine Park, located right next to Coki Beach. Sea Trekking consists of donning a helmet attached to a hose and walking across the ocean floor to view the scenery up-close and personal. Another alternative to viewing life below the waves is setting sail on one of Atlantis submarine's underwater oddesys. Sailing, windsurfing and fishing are also popular water sports.
